The alumna of the month for February com from Educational Sciences. Dr. Mandy Pastohr is President of the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control. The first woman to hold this top position not only studied at TUD, but also conducted research and earned her doctorate at TU Dresden. When she thinks of influential figures, the first person who comes to her mind is Prof. Hanno Hortsch: “He encouraged us to get in touch if we wanted to write proposals for research projects, teach courses, or review theses. Later, he became my doctoral supervisor,” she explained.

However, instead of pursuing an academic career, she later moved into political consulting. In August 2024, Dr. Mandy Pastohr was sworn in as President of the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA). Her work there involves foreign trade, economic promotion, and energy, among many other areas.

Speaking about her former major subject, she said: "My studies made me of a generalist. I've got a pretty broad knowledge base, love learning, am curious, and can reflect on things. And my background in educational science helps me when it comes to managing people.“

Two-Day Excursion to Bucher Hydraulics and Liebherr Aerospace Inspires Students

When theory comes alive, unforgettable learning experiences are born. On December 16-17, 2025, 19 students from General Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Automotive Engineering experienced an extraordinary excursion to two industry leaders.

The joint initiative of our Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic System Technology at TU Dresden and HTW Dresden took students directly to the pinnacle of industrial innovation.

Day 1: Bucher Hydraulics – Where Precision is at Home

In Klettgau, Bucher Hydraulics welcomed us with a warmth that immediately conveyed: Here, nurturing young talent is truly lived. Following a captivating introduction to the company's history and impressive product portfolio, a presentation on development processes allowed students to dive directly into the hydraulics industry mindset.

The absolute highlight: Four interactive stations, specially designed for our visit! Here, our students could establish direct contact with development engineers, discuss current projects, and gain authentic insights into the latest product developments. The subsequent tour through the state-of-the-art production facility perfectly rounded off the day – every manufacturing step became a live experience.

Day 2: Liebherr Aerospace – Soaring Heights of Technology

After an overnight stay at the Veitsburg Youth Hostel in Ravensburg, we continued to Lindenberg to Liebherr-Aerospace and Transportation. Here too, our students were welcomed with open arms and received profound insights into a world where precision can mean the difference between life and death.

The comprehensive facility tour through production, testing, and development areas left students amazed: How are complex systems for the aviation industry created and tested? The technical exchange with on-site engineers opened valuable perspectives on the special requirements and innovative solutions in aerospace technology.

More Than Factory Tours – Inspiration for the Future

These excursions are far more than traditional plant visits. They create emotional connections between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Students return not only with technical knowledge, but with concrete visions of their professional future and a new appreciation for the complexity of industrial processes.

Direct dialogue with experts, experiencing cutting-edge production technologies, and understanding current challenges provide lasting motivation and enrich university education with a dimension that no textbook can convey.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Bucher Hydraulics and Liebherr-Aerospace and Transportation for their exceptional hospitality and valuable insights. Such collaborations not only strengthen the connection between science and industry, but also inspire the next generation of engineers.

" />

Focus on promoting primary prevention of mental illness

TUD Dresden University of Technology plans to cooperate with AOK PLUS in order to promote the mental health of its employees and students in a targeted manner. The “Mindful University Culture” project aims to create a culture that promotes openness, respect, and mutual appreciation, while establishing mental health as an essential component of a sustainable and supportive university environment. All TUD students and employees are part of the project’s target group.

“The joint project with AOK PLUS will make a key contribution to the advancement of a healthy, inclusive, and resilient TU Dresden,” explains Prof. Roswitha Böhm, Vice-Rector University Culture and Internationalization at TUD. "The project consists of two parts: By establishing a network of certified mindfulness multipliers, we will not only create effective mindfulness resources that promote individual mental health, but also strengthen nurturing relationships. By training employees and students to become certified mental health first responders, we will be able to provide early support to colleagues and fellow students experiencing mental health issues. This will enable us to identify signs of mental health problems at an early stage, provide information about local support services, and facilitate access to professional help.“ The Vice-Rector further highlights: “Overall, the project not only contributes to promoting individual health, but is also a crucial step towards a respectful and non-discriminatory university community.”

“With the ‘Mindful University Culture’ project, we are joining forces with TU Dresden to strengthen an environment in which health, appreciation, and mental well-being are a natural part of everyday life,” says Jana Maywald, Head of the Dresden Regional Center, who signed the project agreement on behalf of AOK PLUS. “A healthy university thrives on mindfulness, openness, and mutual support – values that we as a health insurance provider are actively seeking to promote. With its commitment, TU Dresden is demonstrating how a holistic approach to health promotion can be sustainably integrated into everyday university life. We are delighted to support this process with our expertise in health management and to provide impetuses for a resilient and sustainable university culture.”

Background information on mindfulness:
The focus is on establishing a network of certified mindfulness multipliers (employees and students) at TU Dresden in order to create a broad foundation for mindfulness initiatives. The idea behind this is the concept of the “Mindfulness in Education and University Culture” (ABiK) project run by the Center for Teacher Training and School Research at the University of Leipzig, which focuses on the development of self-awareness and empathy skills as well as the assumption of responsibility against the backdrop of perceived interdependencies. The concept encompasses the development of skills in individual, social and ecological mindfulness. The emphasis is on each individual, their fellow human beings and society as a whole, with the aim of creating a healthy university and leadership culture.

Background information on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA):
MHFA is a proactive approach to promoting mental health and creating a supportive environment at TUD with the aim of raising awareness of mental illness, creating a network for early help and support, and destigmatizing and eliminating discrimination against people with mental health issues. To this end, employees and students are trained to become certified mental health first responders. The basis for this is the concept of MHFA Ersthelfer, the provider licensed by Mental Health First Aid International for mental health first aid courses and instructor training in Germany. The aim is to enable individuals to recognize signs of mental health problems at an early stage, provide information about local support services and resources, facilitate access to professional support and, as a result, prevent mental health crises.
Born in Dresden in 1935, she narrowly escaped deportation and murder and was one of only 41 surviving Jews in Dresden after the end of World War II. This will be the third time that Renate Aris speaks at TUD about her moving life story. She will share personal memories of the Nazi era, her survival, and the challenges of starting over. The talk offers a rare opportunity to learn firsthand what exclusion, persecution, and racism meant during the Nazi era. The 90-year-old does not let her age deter her from her tireless efforts to prevent history from being forgotten – she continues to speak primarily to young people. Aris combines her memories of the Nazi era with an unyielding, highly topical plea for humanity, enlightenment, and moral courage.
