TU Dresden has taken an important step towards more diversity in studies, teaching, research and administration with its successful certification in the "Shaping Diversity" audit. Measures have already been initiated as part of this ongoing process - some of which are already being implemented.
On September 3, 2025, an event entitled "Vielfalt weiterdenken an der TUD" (Rethinking diversity at the TUD ) will take place, which will enable an exchange on the progress of the audit process to date, create space for reflection and provide new impetus for further implementation.

“An island of peace for absolutely concentrated work!” - “A lifeline to be able to write!” - “An opportunity to focus and rest and, surprisingly, a nice community with colleagues.” - This is the all-round positive feedback from participants of the writing retreat organized by the Center for Continuing Education “Just write. Time to write for professors”.
In September/October 2024 and March 2025, TU Dresden professors found time to write one week each. Secluded and yet easily accessible, quiet, with plenty of nature and views of the cross-border mountain landscape, with practical rooms and excellent catering, the Windmühle Seifhennersdorf e. V. offered the ideal location for such intensive writing times.
Project proposals, articles, solo and collaborative writing projects and much more were brought along by the participants, developed further and partially completed. The support of a professional writing coach during the writing time played an important role and was perceived as very helpful by the writers.
The feedback from one participant sums it up well: “The writing retreat was fantastic because it not only provided space to write, but also offered the opportunity to think about ‘strategic’ publication issues in a calm and individual way - without too many guidelines or grids […] That's really valuable!”
As part of the continuing education program for professors, “Just write. Time to write for professors” has proven itself in every respect. Lydia Barth, who is responsible for the offers for professors at the Center for Continuing Education, is delighted that the writing retreat has generated such inspiration and that it has already become a fixed part of the offer for the target group.

Integrating writing didactics into teaching is often a real challenge. In order to support lecturers, supervisors and tutors in designing writing-promoting teaching and accompanying student writing processes, the Writing Center of TU Dresden (Schreibzentrum - SZD) has published the brochure Starthilfe Schreibdidaktik ("Writing Didactics Starter Guide").
In a total of fice modules, you have the opportunity to reflect on your role as a teacher in relation to student writing. In addition to didactic input, each chapter contains concrete methods or checklists as well as useful exercises that you can pass on to your students. Best practice examples from other teachers round off the brochure with authentic insights into different didactic approaches to writing.

Finally write in peace! The new offer "Just write. Time to write for professors" from the Center for Continuing Education (ZfW) is intended for those authors who are looking for a space in which they can advance their academic text production undisturbed.
The writing retreat exclusively for professors will take place for the first time this fall on the premises of the Seifhennersdorf windmill in beautiful Upper Lusatia. The event will be accompanied by an experienced writing consultant and editor as well as a member of staff of the Center for Continuing Education.

The Postdoc Center's four-day Grant Writing Boot Camp is directed at Postdocs, TUD Young Investigator and Junior Professors who want to work intensively on their text strategy and the competitiveness of their third-party funding applications.

In order to better support all TU Dresden students in writing academic papers, the Writing Center team has compiled methods, tips and checklists from eight years of Writing Center work in the expanded and revised new edition of Yump-Start your Writing. Just like the first edition from 2018, the structure of the almost 70-page new edition is based on the phases of the writing process so that students and lecturers can quickly find the right method to try out or incorporate into courses.
Yump-Start your Writing is available digitally and in print, in both German and English. “TU Dresden is one of the most family-friendly universities in Germany.” This is how Dr. Elisabeth Mantl describes TUD, one of the auditors in the “family-friendly university audit ” who has monitored the university for many years. Today (September 29, 2023), re-auditing of TU Dresden was confirmed. We have been successfully certified for the sixth time. The award recognizes the many years of work TUD has invested in creating optimal conditions for both employees and students with children or care-giving responsibilities.
“A family-friendly university requires various individual components,” said Professor Roswitha Böhm, Vice-Rector University Culture. “These include flexible working hours and the ability to work remotely, which we have included in our service agreements; childcare outside of the regular daycare hours; and advisory services for university members who have care-giving responsibilities. It is also essential to us to raise awareness of family friendliness throughout the university in general and to embed it in our management culture.”
Balancing family life with work or studies is a particular challenge for universities, and one for which TUD is actively seeking solutions. For example, due to the very early summer vacation of the Saxon schools in 2024, there will be hardly any overlap of school and semester breaks, which poses major challenges for many families when it comes to planning vacations. Moreover, taking time off from work for parenting or care-giving responsibilities is still difficult to compensate for in an academic career. In addition, young fathers in particular often still encounter prejudices when they want to take on family duties on an equal footing. Strengthening them, and thus the entire family, is a focus of the activities in the new action program.
At TU Dresden, the family-friendly university initiatives are coordinated by the Vice-Rectorate University Culture and the Directorate University Culture. The audit family-friendly university is a tool for implementing and advancing family-friendly working and study conditions. In the winter semester, the Writing Center of the TU Dresden and the SLUB offer a joint series of events on the basics of scientific reading and writing (events in German): In lectures with tips and exercises you can, for example, find out which writing and working type you are; how you can organize your writing process well, overcome writer's block, structure your texts sensibly and revise them; which reading and writing strategies help you and how you can use literature management and other helpful software sensibly.
